Across land and sea, we are committed to improving housing outcomes in Queensland.

About Us

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland was established in 2021. We are a new not-for-profit organisation that is the professional peak representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing providers in Queensland. Our purpose is to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing outcomes in Queensland.

Our Members consist of Queensland based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Housing Organisations (ICHO’s), Indigenous Councils and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations who provide housing related support services.

ICHO’s provide social housing properties in Queensland, complementing the Queensland Government and mainstream community social housing stock. Combined, these ICHO’s manage a $500 million housing portfolio of more than 2,000 rental properties. This portfolio is home to people who are on low and moderate incomes who find it hard to access affordable or appropriate housing in the private market.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland will partner to develop a strong housing sector through capacity building, knowledge transfer activities and through participating and influencing the development of public policy that relates to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing in Australia.

We will foster informed public debate on the key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing issues for Queensland, through both private forums and public events, research, and by engaging key decision makers and the broader community. The work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland is rigorous, and above all, it will be practical.

Our Vision

The vision of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland is:

To eliminate the disparities in housing experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland.

We achieve our vision through partnerships, providing advice, advocacy and capacity building activities. We believe that a strong community housing sector and long-term partnerships between government, the private sector and our Members can play a significant role in improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing outcomes in Queensland.

Our Origin

The clear need for a single voice for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing providers in Queensland led to the formal establishment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland in January 2021.

Our founders include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Housing Organisations (ICHO’s) and community leaders from across Queensland. They wanted to create a professional organisation that could leverage the expertise of Members and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing experts to continually improve housing and accommodation support services in Queensland.

For over a decade, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing organisations and community leaders have advocated for a professional peak representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing in Queensland. Our organisation is a a result of their vision, advocacy and determination.

In 2020, the Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works tendered for a Queensland contractor to auspice funding to establish the State Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Body. Several submissions were received by the Queensland Government. A detailed proposal from Umpi Korumba Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Housing was successful and they were awarded the contract to auspice the funding to establish the State Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Body in October 2020.
