Our Impact
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland has been at the forefront of delivering high impact through our advocacy, advice, projects, products and service.
Our work is focused on creating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing outcomes.
Housing Queensland will continue to deliver long-term benefits to our members, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and also government. Highlights of our impact work since our incorporation in 2021 include the following:
Our 2025 Impact
- The creation of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Definition’ to describe and define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing in Australia.
- The creation of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Housing Provider Housing Model’ to describe the housing model used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Housing Providers in Australia.
- The creation of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Strategic Investment Framework’ to guide where government investment should be directed in Australia.
- The creation of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Policy Harmonisation Agenda’ to refocus government policy and program investment on reducing overcrowding and homelessness; and increasing home ownership and housing assistance.
- The commissioning of ‘Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Research’ to better understand housing characteristics and use this evidence to improve housing outcomes.
- Helping establish the ‘Queensland First Nations Housing and Homelessness Partnership’ to monitor government commitments and provide independent advice to the Queensland Government.
- The creation of the electronic ‘Gunyah Housing News’ weekly newsletter to increase housing knowledge across the Sector.
- The creation of the ‘Good Guide to Establishing a State Housing Policy Partnership’ to assist other jurisdictions in Australia wanting to establish an effective and well considered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Policy Partnership.
- Appointed to the Queensland Housing Ministers’ Homelessness Ministerial Advisory Committee (HMAC) so that we can provide a First Nations perspective on what is needed to improve First Nations homelessness in Queensland.
- Being appointed to the Queensland Housing Ministers’ HMAC Supportive Housing Sub-committee so that we can provide a First Nations perspective on what supportive housing includes for First Nations partners in Queensland.

- Advocate for rights to First Nations’ self-determination;
- Increase Sector capacity, skills and knowledge through training, workshops and events;
- Provide opportunities to network and build partnerships;
- Provide a policy platform for our Sector.
Influence Legislation and Policy
- Amplify solutions to achieve the ‘National Agreement on Closing the Gap’ Targets 9a and 9b that relate to housing;
- Advocate for flexible, place-based, funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing types and housing supply;
- Increase the awareness of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing, the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Definition’ and the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Housing Provider Housing Model’ and specific local housing needs;
- Prepare pre-budget submissions that are clear, frame an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing issue with a solution, contain evidence, provide a return on investment and align with government priorities;
- Seek reforms to various legislation to improve the housing system;
- Suggest improvements to housing policies and programs to provide greater resources, opportunities and support for First Nations housing.
Work with Partners
- Provide critical tailored support to government and partners;
- Influence the housing industry to adopt best practice in engaging with First Nations people and our Sector;
- Partners to unlock the potential of our Sector and promote First Nations-led solutions;
- Build more partnerships and alliances to advance the housing rights and interests of First Nations peoples in Queensland.
Be a Professional Entity
- Act with integrity, honesty and respect;
- Lead and govern the company properly and conduct quarterly Board meetings and an Annual General Meeting each year;
- Fulfil all the responsibilities and functions of a professional State Peak Body;
- Stay focused on the delivery of our Strategic Plan commitments and agreed priorities.
